"2005--the Einstein Year in Bern", and
other social and cultural events within the EPS13
Bern will welcome you with a rich programme of
scientific and cultural events. In the week preceding EPS13, several
scientific events and cultural events will take place in connection
with the "2005--the Einstein Year in Bern" (www.einstein2005.ch)
and EPS has also arranged for excursions — immediately before
and after EPS13 — into the picturesque surroundings of Bern
and into the Alps.
Thursday and Friday, 7 and 8 July 2005
The EPS History Group is co-sponsoring the
public science-history Symposium "Heuristics, Discovery and
Innovation: Einstein's annus mirabilis", wich will bring together
today's leading Einstein biographers.
Saturday, 9 July 2005
Three public scientific lectures will be
presented by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, Alan Guth and Anton Zeilinger.
The lectures are scheduled in the morning and will take place in
the Burgerratssaal of the Kulturcasino. Access is free.
A public Einstein celebration (‘Festakt’)
in the presence of leading figures from academia, culture, industry
and politics will take place during the afternoon in the Concert
Hall of the Kulturcasino.
This festive occasion stands under the patronage of the President
of the Swiss Confederation and will be interspersed with musical
performances. The ‘Festakt’ will feature an address
by the President of the Confederation, a précis of the discussions
preceding the award of the 1921 Nobel Prize to Albert Einstein,
a rendering on what it means to be a physicist today, as well as
remarks by the recipient of the Einstein Medal 2005.
Monday, 11 July 2005
Meeting Einstein - experiencing physics(www.bhm.ch), will be offered
to the particicpants by the Bernese Historical Museum.
Please indicate on the registration form, whether you and any accompagning
persons wants to participate in the reception. Note that the Historical
Museum, albeit within walking distance (about 15 to 20 minutes)
from the University is on the other side of the old town of Bern.

We are planning a concert with music from the time of Albert Einstein’s
annus mirabilis.

Conference Dinner (not included in the registration fee)
In order to avoid a conference dinner with too many guests, the
participants will have the choice between two different dinner locations,
namely at the Zentrum Paul Klee or in the
Kornhauskeller.
Please reserve your dinner with the registration form, by 1 June

Thursday, 14 July -

Annual Meeting of the Swiss Academy of Sciences.
The Annual Meeting will be opened with a Main Symposium (two open
lectures) and be followed by an Award Ceremony and a grill party.
Friday, 15 July
EPS13 Open Day “Einstein Heute”
The EPS Physics Education Division, in collaboration with the Swiss
Academy of Sciences and the Swiss Physical Society, will organise
an Open Day with the general theme “Einstein Heute”
with a programme destined for the general public. It will feature
lectures, round table discussions, demonstration sessions as well
as a science fair. The European Inter-governmental Research Organisations
CERN, EFDA/JET, EMBL, ESA, ESO, ESRF and ILL (EIROforum) will participate.
A web cast for pupils is planned, which will provide links to laboratories
in some of these organisations.The EPS13 Open Day
is part of the Annual Meeting of the Swiss Academy of Sciences and
will offer keynote talks on modern scientific work and applications
of Albert Einstein’s discoveries a century ago.
